Auckland is Awesome!

We got to the airport on time, and whisked right through baggage check in and screening. In honor, we decided to celebrate in the airport bar.

After a VERY long (sleepless) flight, we arrived in Auckland around 5 am New Zealand time (around 10 am CA time). We hopped in a shuttle bus and weaved through the city streets in the dark to the hotel. They were kind enough to check us right in. The room is absolutely gorgeous. We sure enjoyed showering and relaxing a bit before heading out to explore the city.

Room at the Lagford Hotel, Auckland.

A light rain was falling when we arrived, and cleared to reveal this beautiful rainbow as seen from our hotel window. The end of the rainbow was in the park right across from the hotel. On that note, we bundled up and headed out.

Sky Tower and chapel

We were drawn to the skytower, where we made reservations for dinner for Tuesday evening. That will be magnificent. In true Kiwi style, they bungee jump off the skytower.

We had a wonderful breakfast on Vulcan Street at the Vulcan Cafe

Vulcan Street

Queen Street, the main drag in Auckland. The city is clean and beautiful, with an amazing and eclectic mix of architecture and public spaces. The skyline is magnificent. And it's right on the stuning, shimmering harbor.

Auckland harbor bridge is a popular bungee jumping location.

We had a very full day of exploring the city. The hotel had a wonderful buffet dinner...we actually controlled ourselves (except for the salmon sashimi!). All of the cuisine here is international, and beautifully presented. Did I mention delicious? I had no idea Auckland is such a marvelous city.

Stay tuned for more adventures in Auckland on our second day...harbor boat cruise and sky tower dinner!
